To all interested parties:
Now stumbling, then jumping, I descended from Mitata about a kind of moon landscape. Below, and now for all freight traffic unreachable, the fertile gardens and orchards lay. On the other side, beautiful mountains but unreachable now, in the distance the village with the olive-press. In the fall evening, some gardeners struggled uphill, heading for home. A careful donkey carried some fruit and vegetables. Only a whirlwind of compassion and a hail of contributions can counteract the flaring up vitality of the inhabitants of Kythera. At this moment, they courageously walk the poor island to sell their lottery tickets for “their road”. But all the money for material must come soon: fl. 10,000, – (Dutch guilders)!! When the rain falls, the road must be ready. If it’s possible, a concrete road! If the money comes before July 15 (1966), strong Dutch boys could work with the courageous residents. Those boys are here for a summer work camp elsewhere on the island. “Bis dat qui cito dat” (who gives double, who gives fast). Your contributions can be transferred to Mr. Chr. Tsamberis, World Council of Churches, Sophocleos 1, Athens 122. “For the Mitata road, program of the Kythera-Team”. Or to Miss B.A.M. de Groot, Nieuw Beerschoten B 55 Zeist, girobank account 66670. Still this: no drachma will be rake-off. You can also collect in your own circle, like Bengt Ericsson. For how do we arrive at a thousand meter road length (of 31/2 meters width)?

Rondschrijven van Mejuffrouw Mr. Maria de Groot in antwoord op Annie en Jurjen Koksma’s verzoek aan haar om hulp voor Mitata na de catastrofale regen in oktober 1965.

Aan alle belangstellenden:
Nu eens strompelend, dan weer springend, ben ik van Mitata afgedaald over een soort maanlandschap. Beneden, en nu voor alle vrachtverkeer onbereikbaar, lagen de vruchtbare tuinen en boomgaarden. Aan de overzijde, wonderschone bergen en onbereikbaar nu, in de verte het dorp met de olijvenpers. In de vallende avond klommen enkele tuinders moeizaam naar boven, huiswaarts. Een voorzichtig ezeltje torste wat groente en fruit. Alleen een wervelwind van medeleven en een regen van bijdragen kan voorkomen dat de opflikkerende levensmoed van de inwoners van Kythera versaagt. Nu nog lopen ze dapper het arme eiland af voor “hun weg” lootjes te slijten. Maar al het geld voor materiaal moet snel komen: fl. 10.000,-!! Voor de regens vallen moet de weg klaar zijn. Als ’t even kan, een betonweg! Als voor 15 juli (1966) het geld bijeen is, dan zouden sterke Hollandse jongens samen met de dappere inwoners mee kunnen werken. Die jongens zijn hier dan voor een werkkamp elders op het eiland. “Bis dat qui cito dat” (die dubbel geeft, die snel geeft). Uw bijdragen kunnen worden overgemaakt aan Mr. Chr.
